Jun. 30th, 2003 03:40 pmThe abbreviated post of iggy lyrics was an error, my bad.
1) You say on your bio page that sunrises and sunsets turn you on. Any thoughts on what about them really gets to you? And, have you ever gotten to share a sunrise/sunset with someone special (whether platonic or not)?
I love it when the sky turns colors. I love the way my skin looks when it's painted red and gold and pink with sunlight. I love being warm and drowsy and entangled with someone else. Or I imagine I'd like it anyway.
Sunrises....I always see them from the night into morning side, and especially when I'm drowsy, if I'm with someone, inhibitions just kinda melt away.
2) You have board games listed as an interest. Which games do you like to play? And are you someone who plays those games to win or just to have fun with the other players (does a competitive streak come out in you when you play board games)?
All sorts. I play monopoly and stuff like that, but then I also play wargames and strategy games like settlers of cataan and talisman and maharajah. I play to win. I hate it when people mess with me hardcore and I get mad about it. SOmetimes I jsut do things in game out of spite, which is fun in and of itself.
3) H.P. Lovecraft came from my home state, but I am woefully uninformed about this author and works. I've found a website with a bunch of his works on it. If I wanted to educate myself about Lovecraft, what are some "must reads" ?
Get any of the collections that are out there. But I think "Tales of the supernatural and the macabre" is best as a primer. Not the dream cycle collection, nor the early works, or cthulhu 2000. If you can FIND it, read "Supernatural Horror in Literature" which is his essay on horror fiction. As far as stories? The Call of Cthulhu, The Dunwich Horror, The Colour Out Of Space, and the novella "At the Mountains Of Madness" are my favorites.
4) Teaching is also mentioned on your interest list and sometimes you mention it in your LJ. What do you like & dislike about teaching? Do you consider it a job or a vocation?
I think it's a vocation for me. I think it's one of those things you HAVE to do. You MUST do. If you go to work dragging every day, I think that you need to leave. I love the actual classroom work, when I'm well prepared. Everyone gets it somewhat. They understand what you're getting across, and it's SO rewarding. I dislike the prep and paperwork. I wish I had someone to do it for me. Eventually, maybe I'll work at a college and have a secretary.
5) I grew up in New England, but I've just barely been to NYC (if bus stations, airports, and driving straight thru it count), and I had relatives for a while on Long Island (so I've caught a glimpse of it too). Are there any must-see's or must-do's you'd suggest to me if I ever paused there in my travels?
The american museum of natural history makes the national museum look like a piker's bet.
If you get time and you're a meat eater, go to Peter Luger's. Best steak in the world.
Spend an afternoon in central park walking around. It's gorgeous, and if you squint right, you can see art deco 1920's new york all aroudn you.
Go shopping. Figure out what it is you want, and you can get it here. YOu should go to the strand, best used bookstore if you're not looking for anythign specific in the world.
