Jan. 23rd, 2007 09:38 pmThings as they are right now.
I have a really good supervising teacher. She's english and her name is Elspeth. Things are going really well at student teaching. At least I think so. I did my first guided reading today. The kids really responded to me. They got into the idea of spiders and webs and such. Elspeth really asks for my opinion and values what I have to say. I'm not just a student teacher; I feel like an equal partner in the stuff that goes on in the classroom. I enjoy going in every day, but the problem is (and has been) that I don't get paid and I don't know when (or if) I'll be getting money from VZ and my "retirement". Which is the most ironic and funny thing EVAR.
But then I made some phone calls today. You see, Brooklyn College has a summer camp program. It's academic and recreational with a whole panoply of course offerings. Pretty darned cool, I remember doing something like this myself in my youth. So I called them today and inquired as to their teacher/counselor needs. They gave me an email address, and I sent a message to the folks over there. I also called Kingsborough Community College, where I taught spelling and vocabulary before I started school at LIU. They called me back about twenty minutes ago: Would I be willing to teach a writing class for adults, and would I be willing to teach kids on weekends, maybe?
You can imagine my answers.
