Living this close to jersey...*looks out the window of work at the TC path station*, I want to comment on the McGreevey resignation.

Am I proud that the guvnor has come out of the closet? Right as rain I am. Good for him.

His administration was corrupt on a scale that surprises me, even for New Jersey. He hired a foreign national who was his lover in a homeland security position. He can't have a security clearance, people. Man or woman, this is wrong. This is patronage and nepotism at its worst, and he should resign, gay or not gay. And I think that instead of lionizing him for it, perhaps he should be demonized for using his sexuality as a mitigating factor for his malfeasance.

I'm sick of sexuality being used as some justifying factor for this.

Flame the fuck away, I'm irritated.

Good for him for coming out, but he's a dickhead for lying to two different women he was married to and the children he had with them. I don't think there's anything to be proud of in that.

Honestly, Linz, don't you get the feeling that this wasn't exactly a secret except to the public? I do.

Not really considering I don't know him or the wives.

Point taken. It's being called "an open secret" in new jersey politics, but it's entirely possible that neither wife knew. I guess I figure that they'd know.

As someone who has a more personal relation to this (my uncle being one of his good friends), you're right. It wasn't really a secret except to the public, everyone close to him knew.

Y'know, erin, that seems to be the general consensus from what I've read. And honestly, in the end....if the guy actually goes through with the suit, and McGreevey either doesn't comment or argues with him...it's his only option.

No flames here. If he'd been running a clean operation, and had come out of the closet on the back of that, I'd be considering him every kind of hero. As things actually went, it had a strong overtone of "Hey, folks, look at me, I'm gay, maybe that'll distract you from this other stuff".

Props to him for having what it took to come out, and for his voluntary resignation under the other circumstances, but I think he played the sexuality card out of desperation rather than sheer will.

Agree on your first point, and the second as well, oliver. I think he'd still be in the closet if he wasn't being sued.

My problem is that by resigning cause he's gay makes it seem like gay people shouldn't be in politics rather then saying corrupt people shouldn't be in politics. Look, say you did wrong and resign, that is all he needed to do.

I didn't take it that way, but there are more than enough ig'nant people who will. Good call, el. I mean...sexually harassing another man...I think we'd know he's at least bi. Come on now.

*blinks* What does his sexuality have to do with anything? He's trying to, well, go out in a good way--but then I dunno NJ politics that well. So whatever. In any event, this country's wasted enough energy on this whole incident already...I only hope something good comes of it.

I think he's injecting his sexuality into the whole thing and turning this into "they're making me resign because I'm a homo".

Oh, in that case he's desperate and it's a shame. my bad.

I think you're right, Matt.

His sexuality has nothing to do with what happened. The fact that he cheated? A relatively minor gaffe. However, putting an unqualified person into a position of power because of their relationship? Yeah. that wasn't okay. And he needs to say 'I was wrong, and I'm quitting because I was wrong' instead of making it sound like his sexuality is the issue here.

Shocking. I was expecting to be blasted on this, you know, insensitive, blah blah blah.

I guess that I'm irritated that new jersey, which is a greater terrorist target than most other states of the union, had a situation like this where a lot of harm could have been done.
