Apr. 12th, 2004 10:31 pmI don't watch reality TV. Just doesn't appeal to me, in general. Sure, I
watch a little bit of American Idol, but just the beginning couple, when
everyone sucks. But there was one, a couple of years ago. It was called
Combat Missions, and it ran on Showtime or USA, no, it was USA network.
Rudy Boesch, who before he was on Survivor was the longest serving SEAL in
the Navy, was the Commanding Officer. They had former specwar operatives,
swat, a couple of CIA paramilitary vets, you get the idea. Shooters. It was
a lot of fun, terribly entertaining. There were characters I pattern my own
after to this day. There was a really loud former SEAL named Scott
Helveston, real gung ho, snotty though he was. He died in Iraq this past
week. I found myself kind of shocked and upset. I was kind of attached to
him and all the other guys on the show.
On the subject of death: Did everyone see Gladiator? Does everyone
remember the master of the gladiator stable, Proximo? He was played by
Oliver Reed, who was part of that crop of english actors including Richard
Burton, Michael Caine, Terence Stamp, and Richard Harris. Drinking,
carousing, you get the idea. Well, Oliver died during the filming of
gladiator. And I was on the phone with
sisterred, musing about
how he might have died. Off to IMDB I go.....Ol' Oliver died of a coronary.
After he drank three bottles of rum. And armwrestled five sailors. At 61. I
don't know about you, but that's how I want to go, barring the "death in
the saddle".
I seem to have
randomwriter's song, "My Life Is Junk" in my
head today. Don't worry, I won't be burying anyone in a junkyard. it's just
how a good sad country song can sit with you, buying you drinks until last
call only because it looks like you'd enjoy that.
Finished "Full Court Press" by Mike Lupica today. Lupica writes these
satirical sports novels, and this one is about basketball. First woman in
the NBA, and invariably, falls in love with her coach. What's up with that?
Thought that was kinda cliche. But still, it was interesting. Not my
favorite of all time.
Saw Toxic Audio in "Loudmouth" last night. Go see it, it's at the houseman
theater, 450 west 42nd. They're in previews now. It was WAY amusing. Good
stuff. That morning, I went to the cemetary to see my maternal
grandparents. I still have a letter my gran sent me when I was at camp, in
'91. It's on my bulletin board, comes with me everywhere I go. It's
something to see. I miss them. Saturday.....Saturday, I was at
sattruckguy's new place with Tracy, the Sullivans, and Steve and
Steve's ladyfriend. I wasn't ill at ease, which made me happy. It was just
a roomful of friends, and I didn't think of not having someone with me,
right then. Apparently, Laura Sullivan taught one of my little scofflaw
cousins. Didn't know the little bastard had....ahem...evolved quite as he
did. We played Dirty Minds, which is a guessing type game with cards that
you had to spell the word dirty with. I'm not explaining it well, but it
was fun. Then we played In Pursuit, which is a team trivia game. Not to
toot my own horn, but damn....I'm good at that stuff. Won on this question:
"What title did Tenzing Gyatso take in 2000?" Dude, that's SO tibetan!
Dalai Lama.
Someone enlighten me. Is Mother's Day always the second weekend in May?

That sounds like both something Lindsay would say and poetry. Seriously. I may steal that for something.
