(no subject)
Aug. 3rd, 2004 10:31 amI'm currently reading "The Breaking of the Maya Code" by Michael Coe. Coe's the rare academic that can write for non academics, raising the profile of the discipline in popular discourse. Mayan heiroglyphs are truly fantastic to study, and I've read up on epigraphy over the years. The cast of characters in this drama ranges from russians (knorosov and prouskouriakoff), spanish priests (sahagun and de landa), a yalie (coe), a texan (the late and lamented linda schiele, may she rest in peace), two explorers (john lloyd stephens and frederick catherwood), and many others. It reads like a novel. God, I love this book. And the subject. I love mesoamerica almost as much as I do music. I have SO many books on the maya, the incas, the moche, chavin, chan chan, the nazca, and miscellaneous stuff on art and culture of the americas. It's just too cool.
