Wow.

The Hives might be the best live band I've ever seen. The Legendary Shack Shakers were close, but nowhere near as tight as the Hives are. No one ever talks as much shit as Howlin' Pelle Almqvist does. No one. Apparently, according to him, the Hives are my favorite band, and that I need to clap more.

The hives are kind of the apotheosis of the matched suit/jacket garage band that plagues music today. See The Woggles, or whatever bar band is local to you. But better. Tighter. Better singer.

kelefa sanneh wrote a pretty decent review in the Times today. While I agree with miost of what he has to say, I think he denies the essential quality of this band. I don't think they're faking, in a way. I think they really believe, honestly, that they ought to be your favorite band. And they will do most whatever it takes to be so. Pelle jumps, slides, kicks, screams, and hits it on the one every time they start another song. I've had the "best frontman" discussion a number of times with a number of people, and i think that for sheer attitude alone, Pelle Almqvist has to be considered the best frontman of the current crop. Who else is there? I'm talking about "new" bands, which is a relative term. Iggy? Maybe just. I like Geoff Rickly from Thursday, but man...he can't talk shit at all. Possibly some metal band out there, the guy from the Eagles of Death Metal? I personally like the dual harmony attack of Crime and Judy, but they lack the essential arrogance in performance.

I've rambled quite a bit. But suffice it to say, I loved the show last night. I talked to some cool people, flirted a lot.

And our first single should be a cover of The Dictators "The Next Big Thing"!

[livejournal.com profile] dirtbombsfan1 sparked this. blame her.

1) Ode to a black man-Dirtbombs.

Nothing beats the studio version of this track, with the overamped, distorted harmonica solo to start the muhfucka up.

2) Happy-The Rolling Stones

Nothing's better than Keith singing. Admit it, young'un.

3) Cowboy Song-Thin Lizzy

Thin Lizzy should be everyone's favorite band, if only for Phil Lynott's afro.

4) Sister Ray-VU

John Cale's organ solo at the nine minute or so mark kills it dead.

5) In the way I'm accustomed-Bantam Rooster

I defy the white stripes fans in the world and say this is the best duo I've ever listened to.

6) Black Girl-Paybacks

Blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice. Yahright.

7) The Next Big Thing-The Dictators

For the best line of all time.

"Yeah, I knocked 'em dead in dallas, they didn't know we were jews..."

8) Ghost Riders in the Sky-Johnny and Willie, off storytellers

Best country song EVER.

9) I believe in a thing called love-The Darkness

I can't read a music magazine without pictures of Justin in a catsuit, or a quote. I love 'em.

10) Sittin' On Top Of The World-The Mississippi Sheiks

blues sans guitar. Sexah.

11) Feral-The Gories

Yep, find me someone like this.

12) Television-marquee moon

Fifteen minutes or so of bliss.

13) Hold On, I'm Comin'-Sam and Dave

Stax is better than Motown.

14) anything-James Brown

Come on. Do I need to explain?

15) Jealous again-Black Flag (Keith Morris, singer)

I feel no need to explain myself.
